Because Costumes Are Fun

How about some pictures today? I just found out through Melissa's blog about an online costume contest, and I thought--why not? I was meaning to post a bunch of pictures of my son in costume anyway. First up, the Boy as a rap artist: (Yeah, I know I've posted this one before, but I have to do it again. And yes, that is my YW medallion. What else was I gonna do with it? Wear it?) Or if pirates are more your thing, but you're tired of seeing kids dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow... ...how about this? Ever seen a kid dressed up as a treasure chest yet? I really like this one, though I think the picture would have been better if somehow I'd managed to get him to swing on a vine:

Who knew Tarzan had fat rolls?
And here is one of my very first sewing experiments (I am by no means a seamstress--heavens, no! but I found I could thread a needle and stick in in cloth with a desireable result): Oh, and I can't leave out the cat. Not my wonderful, super cat: Another sewing experiment: I wanted to dress the kid up as Draco Malfoy. Everything worked pretty well except his hair, which, to my dismay, I found would NOT slick back no matter what I put in it: No sewing on this one at all:
Et tu, Brute?
And last, the Boy as a traffic light: And yeah, it does light up. Those are tap-lights in there, so he can turn 'em on and off himself. Best part? NO SEWING. Just a glue gun, felt, and scissors. That's my kind of costume!

So cute.

I wish I could get my boy to wear a costume- he hasn't since his first Halloween, when he was not even 2 months old. If I try getting him into one now, he tears it off and runs away naked.

If I can find his first Halloween pic I will post it. He was a crocodile.

So cute!! You are really creative!! I feel bad, this year. I didn't make either costume! Oh well. I don't think I could do Spiderman justice!

So cute!!! I love the stop light that lights up. So clever.

Awesome!! I love the traffic light! You are one talented gal!

I'm thinking we can't be friends anymore. You can cook, AND make costumes...sigh.......I'm so intimidated I can't think straight.
So, did you carry him around in the treasure chest on Halloween? :)

where was the picture of John wearing Jake's stop light costume? john was very disappointed that you didn't include him in this post. and where is this years costume? what is jake going to be?

thanks for the consolation prize. i just got it. i swear i plan on getting my butt in gear and sending you something great...or at least something.

jake and curtis also look so young in that one picture. amazing what one year will do to a kid.

I love the stop light costume! I must do that next year.
But really, all the costumes are excellent. Except Super Cat is not wearing a costume, he always dresses like that, 'cause he’s just Super.

pandy--Jake's not much into costumes, either. But as soon as he understood it meant he got some chocolate, he was pretty willing. (That's how I get most pictures these days: bribery.)

tirzah--oooo, bad mommy! And have you failed to bake your own bread, knit your own clothing, and build your own house out of 100% recycled materials? WHA--?!? Please. I would've bought ALL of his costumes except for the first (I really wanted to make it--now I don't care) except that I couldn't find a Draco Malfoy costume or a traffic light costume.

lisa--thanks, lisa. LOOK EVERYONE! LISA CALLED ME 'CLEVER!' Oh, wait--nevermind. I think she was referring to the costume.

melissa--you want to see talent? You should see what I can do on the dance floor--ooh, yeah! (Ever see that one episode of Seinfeld of Elaine dancing?)

elizabeth--what? No, no, no. You have no choice now. If you refuse to be my friend on such miserable grounds, I'll come hunt you down and slap you with a flounder. And if you think that's an idle threat, I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE.

kristine--yeah, I know. Where's John? Everyone wants to see a picture of John, right? Except I don't have the time to post it now. right now, Jeff is standing in the doorway, shaking his head, and reminding me I was supposed to be in bed twenty minutes ago. Sorry.

NCS--shh! (It's supposed to be a secret! You're gonna blow his cover! But he'll be pleased that you think he's super, and not stinky at all. Me, I still think he's stinky. Cat gas = BAD.)

wynne, you are so clever!!!
(make check payable to Jean Knee)

My fav was the devil tail.

I saw on an episode of the little rascals where Alfalfa slicked his hair back with a huge can-o lard. crisco would probably work

Sometimes I think you had a child just for the dressup options! If so, you sure got yourself a perfect little model for your crazy creations. I love him as Draco. Did he have any, "No, Mommy, I don't want to be the bad guy!" moments as you dressed him up and laughed diabolically?

Last night I stumbled into my house after midnight, returning from my trip tired and cranky and facing a day o' exhaustion at work today. But then I opened that package, and little red angels popped out started singing dirges of joy (or maybe they were devils -- as I said, I was very tired). You're the most delightfully, wackedly creative person I know, Wynne. Do you solemnly swear that there are no illegal drugs involved? I'm very excited to risk my life to try Blackberry Death, and the adorable magnets are on my fridge, and the chicken teeth and bat guano are in my tummy, and I may very well use one of those instant costumes tonight because true to form I have left my costume planning to the VERY LAST minute.

Thank you for cheering me up, bigtime. I fell asleep to glowing skeletons and eerie shimmers from that oh-so-odd fairy house.

When I grow up can I be you? Or maybe I'll have to settle for being you for Halloween. I"ll need a curly wig...

I saw the package last night right before I had to leave for work and I cradled it to my bosom like the precious treasure it is.

I make glass marble magnets too.
I sent out Good Mail with bat guano references just last week.
We read and love Poe. I've made custom pins for people just like you did for me. I knew a good 80 percent of the songs on the CD....and then it hit me. These terrible headaches and inability to remember how to dance The Macarena is because we are sharing a brain, Wynne. Yes, it's true. We are.

I'm going to make a shirt declaring me a 'WYNNE TWIN.' Would that freak you out too much?

We have super crafty powers like the hero duo.....WYNNE TWINS ACTIVATE!

Amazing! I remember the Traffic Light. You are so creative. But you never said what Jake was going to be this year. Good luck on your novel.. oh if I could only be so bold.

I love this little documentation of Halloween costumes past. You are so creative! I'm glad your son is a willing victim. :)

P.S. Good luck in your writing endeavors. You are brave (and smart to do it while you're young and still have a few brain cells to spare!)

Lisa said...

Yeah-you were the clever one to put those push lights in the costume! Good luck on the book writing!!

Cutest costumes!!! Your little guy is adorable. The cat is cute too. ;)

Good luck with your writing. You will be missed!! I hope you don't stay gone too long!

So. Done with that book yet?
I could so come down for your book signing. You're like an hour away. I'd be first in line.
Unless it was a horror book.
I don't like those.
In that case, I'd still come to your book signing, but I'd sip hot cocoa and stare at you from the corner.

The candy corn is all gone.....The bat guano is all gone....and now you're all gone too. :(

Please don't make me sing Janet Jackson's erstwhile ditty, 'Come Back To Me,' because I will if I have to.

okay, i can't leave a comment on your new post. annoying. any how, i have not turned on the news in days because if the tv is on Curtis thinks he has to be watching PBS. So i had no idea what fun you were having.
Let's just hope it doesn't all freeze. Now that would be fun. Glad to hear you are safe and don't have to evacuate to the church, although it sounds like there might be some interesting people and fun blog posts to write about it all.

Alright the kid is excruciatingly cute. No question.

But the cat? Oh my buddah. Look how regal he is in his super cape. My word, woman. Even though that cat has an open, oozing sore that resembles a blood orange, in the eloquent words of your husband, that is one freakin' awesome cat.

No surprise he's orange. Orange cats are the best.
